Now in its thirty-ninth year of publication, the World of Antiques and
Art has become the Australian magazine of record for art, design
and collecting history. Writing these histories in Australia has undergone
significant
shifts since the first issue of the magazine—then titled The Australasian
Antique Collector—appeared in November 1966.
Peter Cook, the magazine’s
inaugural editor, declared that it was for those ‘who concern [themselves]
so effectively and enthusiastically with the preservation of
beauty, for the continuing enrichment of our nation, the local scene and
the individual’.
Art history in Australia was in its infancy and design and collecting
histories were understood under the generic term ‘antiques’ and
preferably had to be of English origin and of pre-nineteenth
century date.
The contents of the current issue reflect these changes and
not only demonstrate our commitment to promoting and broadening an understanding
of the histories
of art, design and collecting but also the high levels of research
and scholarship being achieved by our contributors.
